LET'S HELP!
In the wake of recent tragedies, many in the FISD community have
been asking what they can do to help our neighbors in the Granbury area, West,
Texas and Moore, Oklahoma.
As these communities work to rebuild, the outpouring of support has
been great, but the biggest need continues to be monetary donations.
Donations will be split between the fund to support the town of
West, as well as funds administered by the Red Cross to support those in
Granbury and Moore.

19...
So this little one has had a lot going on...Last Friday he was recognized as our Hippest in the HOUSE for Team Spirit. Mayson is always telling others good try, great job, and asking if he can help!
And...to top it all off...yesterday he celebrated his SEVENTH birthday!!
I'm very sad right now...I uploaded some videos to youtube from Mayson's birthday and from our visit from Mrs. O'Hearn! But when I click on the video and try to share them on the blog but no videos can be found!! I go to youtube and they are there!
Have a wonderful Mother's Day!!
And again, thank you all so much for the wonderful gifts this week. As I told the kids I love being showered with gifts but my FAVORITE day is the day they bring in their handwritten cards. Nothing is more special than that!
This has been a wonderful year! I am just so sad that it is coming to an end so soon!

I felt so happy and wet.
One humid day I went to the circus. And I saw hairhangers and dirtbikes! Who can forget the guy who threw a thirty pound vase in the air! I don't even want to mention the person who got shot out of a canon! the ring master was amazing he tamed tigers! There was a jumping dog show. Now that was funny one almost jumped a mile in the air!

Day Six...
Of project Painted Ladies...
The two to the right in the picture are READY for a chrysalis...but Eliette thinks they are too shy to do their "Chrysalis dance" in front of us!
Observing and recording!
This week we are comparing and ordering numbers to 150. We looked at two charts (100 and 150) and this is what we noticed....
We also made a chart that told us how many digits we needed.
We talked about writing numbers over 99... A lot of 1st graders like to write One Hundred One like this 1001. We checked that with our chart and decided it had too many digits! We better fix it! SO...every once in a while quiz your pup...
The next couple of weeks in Language Arts/S.S. we will be learning about Characteristics of good citizenship and continuing with our Personal Narratives as well as writing a class Fable.
And along with observation of our Painted Ladies we will start talking about our Environment!
REMINDERS...
Tomorrow and Wednesday CAMPUS is closed to visitors. (This includes lunch time)
3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be taking the STAAR test. (I will be administering it again. I do not know who our substitute will be. If you have an emergency or a change in the way your child will go home please call the front office!)

Cameron's Poem:
The Same
By S.J. Wright
(for Cameron Wright)
In some ways, we are
the same.
All of us have hearts
that beat.
All have favorite
things to eat.
Some like ice cream
as a special treat.
We all look different
on the outside.
But inside, we all
want the same thing.
We want the freedom
to sing.
To laugh, to love and
to dream.
You don’t look like
me.
And I don’t look like
you.
But on the inside
that’s not true.
We all get scared,
excited and blue.
When you see someone
who is not like you
Stop and think what’s
best to do.
Think about how
others feel.
And you’ll know the
differences aren’t that real.
Cameron: Your Mom and
Dad love you very much and we are SO proud of you. You are an amazing kid and you constantly
amaze us.
Oceans of FUN...
Everyone looked amazing! Thank you all for making it such a special night. I wish I had pictures of everyone! If you have pictures from last night please send them my way!!!

Day 142
I'm so happy to be back! I had a wonderful long weekend but sure did miss my pups!
We had a pretty good day. Lots of punches! WOO HOO makes me one
happy teacher.
Mr. I just heard from Little Elm. The construction East of our
campus will be for the next month or so as they fix potholes.
I did not get to read with my reading groups today as I had a
few assessments to get done. I will meet
with them tomorrow!
We are finishing up graphing in math this week. We started using
the graph to interpret our data.
As we get nearer to the end of the year assessments will
begin. Next week we will be doing our
independent writing sample. Last week we
worked through the whole process with the prompt Our Best Birthday. This week I am letting go a bit and working
more with small groups on the prompt A time a friend help you. And then next
week they will be on their own. Expectation is 5-10+ sentences on topic with at
least 3 details, an introduction and a closing.
AND we have our fingers crossed that our butterfly larvae arrive
SOON so that we can make observations!
It’s crazy that we are winding down the year…36 days (I question
where the year has gone!)
Top Dog!

Marvelous Monday...
We had a busy Monday morning...
I'm sorry I did not get to all my reading groups in order to give new books! Tomorrow we should be back on schedule.
Today we had group picture retake! And before I knew it...it was time to go to LLI and then recess.
We are starting Personal Narratives the next few weeks. We will be talking about cause and effect as well and adding that to our writing. The last week in April we will be writing our end of the year (yes, you read that right...CRAZY) writing sample. The students will be asked to go through the writing process: Brainstorming, organizing, writing, editing and revising, on their own. I will collect these pieces and add them to their literacy folder. It's always fun to see how they develop as writers K-5.
We took our spelling pre-test today...Be sure to look over these words daily. Last week our spelling pattern was vowel (o) consonant silent e...We talked extensively about this pattern creating a long vowel sound. This week we will have the same pattern just using the vowel (i) instead.
On Thursday we started collecting data. Now we need to start sorting that data so that it will be easy to get information from!
I asked everyone to pick their favorite color crayon. Then everyone put the crayon in a big baggie. We decided that we couldn't tell much about all the information we had. It just looked like a bunch of crayons.

Steps to sorting:
- dump out all of the colors
put all the same colors in a pile(pile didn't work much better...we could see which had more or less BUT as Jack said, "a master of subitizing could not subitize those!")put all of the same colors in a line(but what kind of line. We tried this but all of the crayons were not the same length. "Put them shortest to longest...Nope that doesn't help.")- put all of the same color in a line ON TOP of each other!!! DING DING DING This was the most organized way of sorting and made it the easiest to look at and interpret! "HEY, that's a chart or a graph!" I love it when they GET it and I don't have to do much! ;)
This week in science we will be talking about the parts of a butterfly...
Vocabulary: head, thorax, abdomen, antennae, eyes, proboscis, legs, and wings
Today we talked about the antennae, eyes, proboscis, legs and wings. Feel free to discuss with your pup!
- antennae: butterflies have 2 on their head and use them to "smell".
- eyes: compound, able to see in many directions without turning their head used to see
- proboscis: a slender straw like organ used to sip nectar, juice and water
- legs; 6 legs used to taste
- wings: 2 pairs that help them move and fly they also feel vibrations because they do not have ears to hear with.
IMPORTANT:
- field trip forms and money due April 12
- if you use a yahoo account to correspond with me...We are not receiving nor are we able to send emails to these accounts. FISD tech people are aware of the issue and are working on solving the problem. Wow!
STAAR week seemed to fly by (for me)...I sure did miss my pups!
TOP DOG Week...
These were a few of the more challenging ones! Way to work through it!
Probability Mini Lesson
We watched There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. "What did we learn from that?" "I didn't learn anything from that!" (I just smiled)
We retold the story and I listed the animals. Then I made a tree map and our categories were certain, likely, less likely and impossible. I closed my eyes and pulled out an IGUANA...we had to place it on the tree map! Then I closed my eyes and pulled out a HORSE we placed it on the tree map... We did this with several more animals (including all from the story). We found that if they were in the story they were all LIKELY to be pulled out! It could NOT be certain because it was not the ONLY animal. We then defined equally (The same)...We came to the conclusion that each animal had an equally likely chance of being pulled out!
Feel free to watch the video and discuss with your child certain, likely and impossible!
Each table group was then given a spinner with each animal on it and a data recording sheet. Each child was to spin it 5 times for a group total of 20. They were to record their answers on the recording sheet. We will use this as we move into data collection and organization next week!
Problem solving:
Ooooh boy...there were some THINKERS today. The problem was: My number is greater than 45 and less than 90. It has 7 tens and 16 ones. "Miss Guy that doesn't make sense." I told them NOT to tell me why it didn't make sense but they were thinking on the right track!!! I was so happy to see many of them started drawing rods and units...some got the right answer in their head...I had to have them explain how they got it and YEP...they GOT IT! When we discussed as a class, we talked about 45 and 90 not really being needed to SOLVE the problem but it was good information for checking to make sure our answer was REASONABLE!
TOP DOG Week...
All About Me...
Astronauts
Favorite Book! and Lunch with the Family!
Mom, Makenzie and Kaitlyn all came to enjoy Lunch with our TOP DOG!
Number Talk: What is an arrow used for and where do we see them? We see them "on the road, on signs, on papers and on a flow map!" "They tell us where to go!" Awesomeness!!!
Then I put a number on the board and drew some arrows! We had to figure out where to go...after completing a few...we noticed that the left right arrows told us to go up or down 1 NUMBER (so we used the ones place) and the up/down arrows told us to go up or down 1 group of 10 (so we used the tens place)! Then they gave it a try on their own with partners!

BUTTERFLIES
We started our Life Cycle unit this week! We will be learning all about butterflies. This week we focused on the life cycle. (We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our Painted Ladies)
Discuss the life cycle with your pup and have them identify the different stages.
Egg, caterpillar (larvae), chrysalis (pupa) and butterfly (adult)
Please send field trip forms and money in together! If I got your forms but no money I asked the
kids to just keep them in their blue folder until everything was turned in! J Just easier on me! Thank you all so much for getting stuff back
in so quickly!
I’m still missing 3 report card envelopes. I need these back signed on the 3rd nine weeks.
Tomorrow…We will go to the book fair sneak peek! Your child will be able to complete a wish
list. Next week there will be several
opportunities to go with your child to the book fair and purchase books! Our day to go (if they have not already
purchased with you…) will be Friday, April 12 at 8:00!
On Monday, April 8th we will have a CLASS picture
retake. Something went wrong with the
camera for a couple of classes! Please have your child PICTURE “PERFECT” on
Monday morning!
Thank you so much! For all that you do...I am one lucky First Grade Teacher!
Monday, April 1, 2013
Welcome back...
We have moved on from time! Everyone was doing a great job telling time to the hour and half hour...so we started to move on! Telling time to the quarter hour and so on was a little bit more difficult. I found this activity and LOVE it...
Today we started talking about certain/impossible.
We read Little Red Riding Hood. The pups then told me things that happened in the story that are impossible in real life and things that happened that could most certainly happen.
We will continue to talk about probability throughout the week.
Butterflies, Butterflies
We are excited to learn all about the life cycle of a butterfly and hopefully watch it happen!
May 2, 2013 FIELD TRIP The Heard Museum
These forms will come home tomorrow! Please send them back ASAP but no later than April 17th. Please note...9.00 in CASH! We are so excited! We have been to the Heard Museum the past few years and have had a great time. Please let me know if you will be able to go with us! We will be hiking on the trails and eating outside!
Have a great evening!
Please remember NO VISITORS tomorrow or Wednesday! I also, will be giving the STAAR test and will not be in the classroom. Please contact the office if you have an emergency or need to change the way your child will get home!
Make a fashion
statement by creating a portable time bead necklace! Kids can practice telling
time wherever they go! Plus, they can flip over their numeral beads to help
them tell minutes on an analog clock. The small beads help them figure out
exactly what the minute hand is on. They just count and slide!
materials: yarn,
plastic beads, construction paper, markers, and pipe cleaners
Numeral paper beads:
Cut 24 squares or rectangles out of construction paper. Write numerals on them
(1-12) and (00-55 - counting by fives). Staple the squares that match back to
back (12 and 00), so you can string it on your necklace.
Necklace: Alternate
stringing your paper number beads and your plastic beads. Once beads are
strung, tie a knot to make a necklace.
For the hands, use
pipe cleaners or anything else you can find! If you're at a restaurant, grab 2
straws! Kids lay their clock on a flat surface and create a time on their
clock. Then, they figure out what time they created! They can cheat and peek,
if they're not sure what the minute hand is on.
The Heard
Museum Field Trip
Dear
Parents,
Our
spring field trip is going to be to The Heard Museum on Thursday, May 2, 2013.
Here
are a few things you need to know:
1. Both the permission slip and $9.00 (CASH ONY) for the field trip
are due Wednesday, April 17, 2013. Also, the cafeteria will need to know if your
child plans to purchase a sack lunch from them, rather than bring one from
home, so please note this at the bottom.
2. If you would like to attend and supervise a small group of
students, then remember that you must be approved as a volunteer to
accompany us so be sure to complete the online application. It is located
at the Frisco ISD website under the heading of Students and Parents. (approval can
take up to 1-2 weeks) . Parents must
provide their own transportation to the museum.
Parents will pay for their admission cost of $9.00 at the museum the day
of the field trip.
3. On the day of the field trip, students must wear long pants,
tennis shoes and insect repellent applied before arrival to school. We also suggest applying sunscreen in the
morning.
We are
really looking forward to our first amazing field trip and expect it to be a
wonderful experience!

Warmer Weather!
I like the way Mrs. Snow put it…”Thursday is the new Friday!” at
least for this week. I am a bit excited
my little sister, my monkey and kissi bug are flying in to surprise their
Grandparents and cousins for the Easter weekend!
This week has flown by and we packed a lot into it…
We are finishing up poetry and seem to really be enjoying it!
Response journals have been outstanding this week.
Must haves: date, title, author’s purpose, main idea and a
response!
Small group CBA testing CHECK!
New guided reading books have been sent home!
Don’t forget…
Tomorrow Spelling Test!
Enjoy the warmer weather!

Thursday
Today was one of those mixed up days...Our afternoon gets long without specials at the end of the day but we made it THROUGH!
Language Arts:
Writing:
Poetry...
We are taking off with poetry writing! I have been able to conference with a few of my authors and UH-MAZ-ING!
Yesterday we wrote a class poem titled Lightning.
Lighting
by The Pups
Faster than sound
hotter than sun
brighter than a light bulb
After it strikes...
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
awake
goosebumps
run
scream
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Today we talked about listening to our poem over and over to make sure it SOUNDS right. We did a lot of moving around and changing words to get it just how we wanted it!
Autumn Fun
Growing on a vine.
I'm picking out nine!
BIG ones
small ones
TALL ones too
They're baking in a pie.
I'm saying good-bye!
BIG ones
small ones
TALL ones TOO!

We are continuing our revisit of what to include in our response journals:
Date, Title, Author's Purpose, Connections,
As we share we are listening to each other and holding them accountable for MUST HAVES.
Math:
Lot's of problem solving and review. The CBA has been pushed back until next week so that everyone has time to catch up!
YOU TUBE has not been cooperating with me...so I have resorted to pictures again!
Problem: On Sunday, Hank ate 2 cookies. On Monday he ate 4 cookies and on Tuesday he ate 6 cookies. If the pattern continues, how many cookies did Hank eat on Saturday?
How many cookies did he eat in all that week?
I had the table groups work together to solve these problems. As you can see they have many steps. They must know the days of the week. They must figure out the +2 pattern and keep it going. and then they have to figure out how many cookies in all!
I loved listening in on their thoughts on how to solve this problem. All groups did a great job. Everyone went through the steps and had the right IDEAS...the addition at the end was a bit tricky...But the thinking was amazing!
Feel free to give your pup some challenging problems and listen to them solve it!
TIME REVIEW:
YES, we are writing on our desks! Oh what a fun way to practice. After, these activities one little pup asked me if we were going to have Math time! I chuckled a little...
Science:
Air is All Around You
Today was experiment day!
Material:
A balloon
Small pieces of paper
Procedure:
Put small pieces of paper on a table
Blow up a balloon (don't tie it)
Let the air out of the balloon with the opening towards the paper
Predictions:
The balloon will pop
That air will come out
The air will come out and scatter the paper off the table
Results:
The air came out of the balloon. The wind was the force that blew the paper off the table.
Extension:
How strong is the force? Scatter different object and repeat procedure. Is the force strong enough to move other things?
I also promised I would add the experiment from
Air is All Around You by Franklyn M. Branley
Is there air in a glass?
Run a lot of water into the sink. Or put water in a big bowl. Color the water with a little food coloring. Not much, just enough to color it a little bit. Stuff a paper napkin into the bottom of a glass. Turn the glass upside down. If the napkin falls out, stuff it in tighter. Keep the glass upside down. Make sure it is STRAIGHT up and down. Do not tip it. Push it all the way under the water or as far under as you can. Lift the glass out of the water. Turn it right side up and take the paper napkin out. It should be dry. The water did not touch it. The paper was under the water. But it didn't get wet. Why?
Have a wonderful evening!
