Thursday! Wow...

The weeks are flying by!  Today was another packed day in First Grade! Today in Social Studies we did get the opportunity to watch the School House Rock Constitution Video!  But prior to that...we made a circle map of everything we already knew about the Constitution!  In orange was prior knowledge!!!

We added the blue after we watched the video!  WOW...what smart first grade dragons there are in room 313! THEN came the question..."Do you think it was important for the Constitution to be written?"  Overwhelming...YES!!! So, I asked why they felt so strongly!  My favorite was, "We wouldn't be here (at school)." "It helps keep us safe."  And, "It gives us freedom!"  We are on our way to understanding the Constitution of the United States!

I won't be here to celebrate Constitution Day so I wanted to make sure we got our song video'd and uploaded today.
After all that Social Studies we headed off to our Workstations (which by the way have become a very important, not to be missed part of our day)!  We are still getting used to using our "1 inch voices" but getting better at it!

Everyone enjoys a GOOD book!

ABC Rhymes with Me!
Thinking Maps, Maps and More Maps!

Let's write!

After lunch and recess we got busy with calendar!  I had some EXCELLENT thinking questions today! "Miss Guy, why are there no numbers on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday?"  We thought about that for a bit and looked back at our August calendar to find that it had ended on Tuesday so we had to start September on Wedenesday! We are always talking about addition and subtraction but today we got down to some serious BUSINESS!  We played Race to Ten. Instructions so you can play at home...You will need a tens frame (or a double ten frame for a lot of my friends), a die, a tile spacer (if you need one let me know...I'll send one home), and some counters!
1.  shake and drop the die and tile spacer!
2.  If it lands on + you get to add , the number on the die, spacers to your tens frame!  AND you must say your number sentence..."0+4=4"
3.  Partners turn...if your spacer lands on - the first time...you are out of luck...we don't take anything away from 0 in first grade!
4.  Shake and drop again...if you get - and you have enough to subtract then you say, "4-3=1"
5. Continue until someone fills their 10's frame (s)

Example of double 10's frame.

Big WINNER!

Looks like we are playing with double 10's frames!

And then on to science and Observable Properties....After looking at fruit for 3 days we've got it down! (Thank you to everyone that brought fruit in!  Today was the last day and fruit is in the trash...it was all getting very "ripe"!)  We came up with some GREAT ways to sort our fruit.

After reviewing the properties we observed yesterday and sorting them out on our tree map...we wanted to explore more!  I must warn you...if you are sensitive to noise...our room is probably not the place you want to hang out! We do a lot of talking (good talking) and our door seems to be getting shut a lot lately from the classes in the computer pod! LOL

Checking to see what sinks and what floats!

Nope!  The APPLE is the HEAVIEST!
Let's take a closer look!
We were right...the orange is heavier than the kiwi...but is it the HEAVIEST?

The pictures are completely out of order...AND I'm getting frustrated...so...I think I'll just leave them this way! Sorry!
BUT before I say have a good weekend!!!Happy Birthday to our THIRD Sept. 15th birthday Nate!

Mmmmmmm birthday TREATS!

Now...I hope everyone enjoys their weekend and I'm sorry I'm going to miss Connor's birthday tomorrow!  Happy Birthday Sweet Boy!
