Finding AREA

Finding areas also requires us to understand repeated addition and that is getting us ready for multiplication! How exciting First Grade is! By the way the area of this rectangle is 32 square tiles.
What great thinking..."Look Miss Guy 5 fours are 20 and 2 fours are 8. Then I took the zero away and put the 8 in the ones place so the answer is 28." I LOVE IT!!!

Trash To Treasure

Yesterday we read The Perfect Purple Feather by Hanoch Piven. In this story a little boy finds purple feather from his pillow. He uses the purple feather to inspire different animals. He finds regular household items to complete the animals!

Your child should be creating "something from nothing" this week. Due on Friday, April 23rd.

Picture Money

Picture money is DUE Friday, April 16th!!! If you do NOT want to purchase spring pictures please make sure you return the package of pictures!

Pupal Stage (day 6)

WOW! I arrived at school at 6:30 this morning...GOOD timing. I got to video our caterpillars (larva) making their chrysalis' going into the pupal stage! They will be in this stage for 7-10 days before emerging as beautiful Painted Ladies. As soon as our last caterpillar goes into the pupa stage I will be transferring them to our butterfly habitat. We will wait and watch anxiously for the beautiful butterflies!

Remember that there are no vistors Tuesday and Wednesday due to the upper level grades taking TAKS. We also sent home some envelops to be signed so your child can be in our class book. Please sign and return that. School pictures need to be returned ASAP.

This week we are working on our book of idioms, so that we can publish it! Everyone is working so hard on their illustrations and handwriting! We are still learning about butterflies, and the different parts of the butterfly. I can't wait till we get our real butterflies in, so we can see them go through the lifecycle! Hope you have a good week!

Thursday, April 1, 2010

This week we are beginning to learn about Butterflies. We have learned the lifecycle of a Butterfly so far! Hopefully next week, we will be getting live butterflies in, so that we can see them go through the different stages of the lifecycle!! If you have any egg cartons that you are going to throw away, please send them. Clear if possible, but we will take any kind you have. We also have been talking about folk tales. This week we read The Little Red Hen, and different versions of The Little Red Hen, and we talked about how the story changed. As a class, we created our own version of this folk tale. Our story is called The Little Sunburned Hen. If you would like a copy of the story, please let me know, and I will copy it for you.

Also, we have been doing a food drive this week. I am so proud of the class, in two days, we have brought in 42 items! Tomorrow is the last day to bring any items for the food drive. Remember no green beans! Have a great day!!
