She runs and jumps

The pup sees mud,
the pup falls down.
The pup has turned
from white to brown.

CHICKEN POX
There's been an outbreak in Room 313!

(parents don't rush over...they are washable chicken pox)

For some reason...I had a feeling there was going to be some sickness going around today. Glad we all came in our jammies...brought our blankets and soft toys to comfort us!  Chicken noodle soup is cooking! I think everyone will be feeling better soon!

November 16, 2010
Today was our first day of no Arthur Rotation! We had lots to catch up on. We recorded Arthur's Thanksgiving and are looking forward to taking pictures to go along with it! (Then Ms. Guy will have to figure out imovie! YIKES)
Today in math we played guess my number. You can play this at home! It's a great way to practice odd/even and place value!
We decided all of our numbers today would be between 0-51!
I started each round by telling if my number was odd or even.  That gave us a clue as to what would be in our ones place!  I might say,
"My number is odd.  The ones place is more than 3 but less than 7. I have 4 tens. What is my number?"
In science we are talking about the seasons!  We start each season with a circle map! We are also making a tree to represent each season...So far we've finished fall and winter!  It looks like a forest in the back of our room!

Congratulations to Emily!
Emily entered the PTA Reflections Contest in the photography division. Emily entered a great set of pictures: Together We Can Help Our Planet
Emily recieved an AWARD of MERIT!
AWESOME

Congratulations!
On Friday, November 12, 2010 Gracie was recognized as our Star Student.  Gracie is a very RESPECTFUL student! We are all proud of her!

Place Value
Today everyone got their own "bean bag"... We were asked to count out a group of 10 and circle it. Continue this process until we could no longer make a group of ten. Listen in on our thinking! (I'm going to put in pictures because video seems to be on the blink again! ARRRGGGHHHH)

Arthur Rotation
Yesterday we went to Mrs. C. Williams' room and read Arthur's Computer Disaster !  Arthur uses his mother's computer while she is at work (after she told him to stay off the computer)!  OOPS something gets broken.  We were asked to flow map the story.  Have your child retell the 10 parts to you!
Today, we went to Mrs. M. Williams' room and read Arthur and the True Francine.  Well...I heard from a group of my girls that Muffy was cheating and then she let Francine get in trouble for it!!! I see they have puppets of Muffy and Francine...I hope they can come up with at better way to handle the situation. Can you believe tomorrow we are headed to Mrs. Davis' room for Arthur's Underwear!

Keep reading Arthur's Thanksgiving!  We will begin recording later this week or early next week. (I'm waiting on a Mac...to be able to get the project started!)

Tonight Baskin Robbins Night! 4-9

Dragon of the Week
November 8, 2010
All About Drake!

We had a very exciting day! We took our spelling pre-test. (There are some repeat challenge words this week!)  We came in to our classroom and found some changes!  We have a backdrop of Arthur's Classroom, His Home and The Stage for Arthur's Thanksgiving!  It changes the whole atmosphere of our own classroom.  This week we will be start our Arthur's Rotation.  Today we read Arthur's Eyes and decided that Arthur was nearsighted. We know this because he could not see the chalkboard from his seat, he had to have his nose in his book, he couldn't see the basketball hoop in gym AND he walked into the GIRLS BATHROOM!!! Arthur went to Dr. Iris the optometrist and sure enough he needed glasses.  Francine wanted glasses too...She came to school with a pair of "fancy" glasses without lenses and said they were her MOVIE STAR GLASSES. We made a pair of our own!

Can you find YOUR movie star?

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make sure your child has his or her reading folder EVERYDAY!  It was difficult practicing fluency with the number of missing scripts!
Thanks again for sending in permission slips.  I have more if anyone has misplaced theirs and needs another...just let me know!
Also...I want to thank the mystery donor of FEATHERS!  They will come in handy! THANK YOU!
Have a wonderful evening! Enjoy the daylight while we have it! :)

Hopefully, the photostory will upload!  Hayden's dad was lucky enough to meet Marc Brown when he was in elementary school.  Hayden brought in some of his autographed books.  One, that we had not seen and we do not have in class is Pickle Things.  Here is Hayden reading it for us! Thanks for sharing your Marc Brown things with us!

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

Well...we are well into our Author study of Marc Brown. We are doing a lot of reading in our classroom...I will be sending home the script for Arthur's Thanksgiving the end of this week. This will be our guided reading for the next couple of weeks! We will be focusing on voice, expression, fluency and delivery!
This week we are working on learning Arthur's theme song.
"Every day when your walking
down the street and
everybody that you meet
has an original point of view.
And I say, Hey! (hey!)
What a wonderful kind of day
if we can learn to work and play,
and get along with each other.
You've got to listen to your heart,
listen to the beat, listen to the rhythm,
the rhythm of the street,
open up your eyes, open up your ears,
get together and make things better
by working together.
It's a simple message and it
comes from the heart, oh
believe in yourself.
For that's the place to start.
And I say Hey! (hey!)
what a wonderful kind of day
if we can learn to work and play
and get along with each other.
Hey! what a wonderful kind of day.
Hey! what a wonderful kind of day.
Hey!
On Monday we all gathered to watch a vodcast by Marc Brown himself.

...and here he is!

Off to the library for Arthur station rotations.

The REAL Arthur!

Arthur is an aardvark.

Arthur's "look" has changed over the years!

Emily seems to be our Arthur EXPERT.

Here are some of the similiarities and differences we notice!
We've got our characters and our setting...now lets see what can h appen!

We're learning to draw Arthur!

PBS.com has lots for us to learn about Arthur.

Woo Hoo...look at that!

Looks AWESOME!

Emily shows off her knowledge of the "other" characters!

Randi wants to get it JUST right!

Today we watch Arthur's Teacher Troubles...OH NO...Arthur is in Mr. Ratburn's class. Did you know that Mr.Ratburn is inspired by Brown's 7th grade Alegbra teacher? He was VERY STRICT... When asked what strict was..."MEAN and SCARY" were the answers I heard the most. But then we started to sort Teacher Qualities and we decided that a strict teacher might be better than a lenient one.
Our tree map goes something like this...
Good Qualities: strict, friendly, hard working, fair and knowledgeable
Not so Good Qualities: lenient, mean, lazy, unfair, uneducated
I guess, you be the judge!
Tomorrow we are going to read D.W.'s Lost Blankie, work on retelling and make a game to help us remember the story!
Have a great evening!

The Best Easter Eggs Ever!

We had a great 50th day in 313!  This morning we worked on our scarecrow stories and they are GREAT...
"Elizabeth the scarecrow has a friendly smile and a pretty hankerchief on  her neck.  She is cute and nice.  Elizabeth the scarecrow looks poofy and Helpful in the field."
"Jack the Scarecrow has a hankerchif and a roap around his neck.  He is Scary and funny.  He lookS Still and growchy in the cornfield."
I love the extra details my little friends are adding!
We were in the computer lab for Istation (monthly assessment) good progress being made there as well.
Then it was RECESS!!! (yes, we went outside...) We will be going outside if the temp and wind chill is 40 or above. PLEASE make sure your child has a coat...hat...mittens...whatever they need to be comfortable outside.
After lunch we were priviledged to have a guest reader! Miss Gracie!!! Well, she brought two of her favorites...AND in keeping
with VOTING DAY...She took a vote on which one to read...
first!  However, since she is the Dragon of the Week she decided to use her power of veto and read her choice! :)
Then it was math time!  Once again...amazing observations going on.  We read Leaping Lizards and then we had to make patterns to show skip counting by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's.  Each table was to make a 100 unifix train showing their counting pattern.  I asked them which table would finish first!  EVERYONE agreed the 10's group would be fastest.  Hayden said that they only had to make 10 groups, the 5's had to make 20, the 2's had to make 50 and the 1's...well it was just going to take them forever!  We put his theory to the TEST!  And sure enough...he was exactly right! After testing it twice I asked the students if  all the trains should be the same length! They said yes because each one was supposed to show the pattern using 100 cubes!  WOW... I'm so impressed...after checking that out we found that a couple of groups went above and beyond 100...OOOPS they were not all the same length but we got that quickly fixed!

Have a wonderful Evening!
Oh...one more thing HOMEWORK...came home tonight!  Please have your children finish the math sheets and return them in the morning!
