I had a wonderful day teaching but I'm worn out! It kind of feels like it's the first week of school all over again. Okay, okay, you all can stop laughing now!
So...today we had to back track a bit and start over on some procedures. I had to explain that things were going to be different once there was only ONE teacher in the classroom. I told them that they were going to have to be even MORE independent. Everyone seemed ready for the challenge. We talked about how we have built our stamina to prepare for this day!
PROCEDURES:
- Unpack backpacks (lunches, blue folders, guided reading folders, notes and such for Ms. Guy)
- Get started on Morning Agenda (up on screen daily) Sunshine folders, word work, and picking our workstations for the day!
Writer's Workshop:
Today we went over using a tree map (yes, again) to make sure we have all the essential parts to a sentence...Capital letter, subject, linking (verb) phrase, details and punctuation. We are getting good at knowing where that punctuation goes when we edit someone's writing but not so good about using it in our own writing! Today I did some PUPS START with a tree map. I have started to add great writing to our Wall of Fame.
And then for those that were finished headed off to their "blue" workstation.
Reader's Workshop:
We reviewed our community and maps. I read a couple of books about maps and then we decided it would be a good idea to make our own. We talked about "bird's eye view" and got started on our classroom map. Some definitely wanted to add a lot more detail than necessary but they turned out AMAZING! (HOMEWORK: create a bird's eye view map of pups bedroom)
And then...as we finished responding we headed off to our green workstation.
My attempt at a bird's eye view!
And can you believe it...that takes up MOST of our morning! And these pups are so great at staying focused and engaged! I love, love, love being their teacher!
After Lunch:
We started a new Ready Freddy. The Pumpkin Elf Mystery is what we have moved onto. But we have some NEW books that we are DYING to read soon...as the holiday comes near! AAND...thanks to Cameron, Eliette and Jack for purchasing our classroom these books!
Math Workshop:
We had some extra friends today...so math time was a bit crazy. However, we did talk about today being our 30th day of school and how we can show 30. We used a bridge map...three rods, three tens frams, 000+30+0, 6 groups of 5 tally marks are all ways we can show 30! This will so become one of our math workstations! YIPPPEEE...the pups love tub time!
Live on 313
And then...MONEY, MONEY MOOONNNNEY (please sing that like the theme song to The Apprentice)! Today we introduced the penny... and get ready for some more singing: (Tune Found a Peanut)
Found a penny, found a penny
Found a penny just now.
It is round and brown and shiny
Found a penny just now.
I see Lincoln, I see Lincoln,
Our sixteenth president.
On the back is his memorial
Penny, penny's worth one cent.
We did some crayon rubbing and describe our penny in our booklet. This week (and probably some of next) is all about identifying and and describing coins. I think we all had a pretty good time!
TOP DOG:
Savannah brought in the COOLEST pop up Jungle Book story! It's a long one so we couldn't read it all...but we sure did look at all the pop up scenes. Thanks for sharing one of your favorite books my TOP DOG!
