Let's Change the state of Matter
Materials:
· 1/2 cup of milk
· 1 to 2 TBSP of sugar (or 1 heaping spoonful!)
· 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla
· 5 Cups of Ice
· 6 TBSP rock salt
· 2 pint size Ziploc bags (because of the vigorous shaking, use Ziploc brand)
· 1 gallon Ziploc bag (because of the vigorous shaking, use Ziploc brand)
· Plastic spoon for each student
* Ziploc bags can be replaced with a large coffee can or anther container with a lid, students can roll the can to one another instead of shaking the bags.
Procedure :
Start by having every student wash their hands!
1. lead the students through the measurement of the ingredients, starting by putting the 6 tbsp of rock salt into the LARGE Ziploc bag.
2. Students will then place their pint size bag into their other pint size bag, (double bagging them), placing them inside the gallon size bag, being careful not to get salt into the small bag (or ice cream will be very salty).
3. With help, students will add milk, sugar and vanilla into the inner small bag. Small bags are closed up with the inner one sealed first and then the outer one.
4. The students add ice to the large bag with the salt.
5. The students will take turns shaking the bag continuously for 10 minutes.
6. At the end of 10 minutes or when the ice cream has hardened (time may vary), take out the inner ice cream bags and discard the larger bag. Lastly, give each student a spoonful of ice cream!
