The Adventures of Artie the Airplane

Our Dragon of the Week, Eli brought in one of his favorite books today! And GUESS what. He has an author connection and brought EVERYONE their very own copy! The book is called The Lost City. It is by Captain Chuck! We have written a thank you note (rough draft in picture) and hope to send it to him soon! (there is rumor that PBS is making a telvision series about Artie and His Adventures!)
Thank you Eli for sharing The Lost City!

let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

What fun! Dec. 2, 2009 Our first "snow"!
Don't forget the winter party is fast approaching! If you could send in 5.00 to help our wonderful room parents prepare it would be greatly appreciated.
We have had such a good week back!
We have introduced a lot of new math stations that allow for basic math fact practice....Both addition and subtraction. Be sure to ask your little one which one is their favorite.
Today we talked about South America...First grade will be "hosting" this continent next Thursday, December 10th at Multi Cultural Night. Be on the lookout for a flyer in Thursday Folders. We are asking for a few donations.
Beginning tomorrow we will start our Holidays around the World study. Each day your child will be introduced to a new country and it's winter holiday traditions. Our classroom will be all about the Good Ole USA and Christmas, Mrs. Crosswhite will be talking about Kwanzaa, Mrs. Williams-Sweden, Mrs. Davis-Australia, Mrs. Boor-Isreal, Ms. Iwai-Mexico and Mrs. Green-China!!! Each day we will rotate to a new country and learn about it's traditions. Yay! What fun...
Ms. Woodard's last day will be on Friday! Ms. Caras will return to our classroom on Jan. 19th for 5 days a week until spring break! YIPPPEEE and then Ms. Woodard will return after spring break until the 1st part of May! Wow! How lucky we are!
I hope everyone is enjoying this holiday season! If you weren't already in the mood I bet the SNOW gave you a little push!

December 1-Parent Meeting
Robertson Elementary –
Tuesday, December 1st@ 7:00pm-Robertson Cafeteria
How to Help Your Child Improve Performance, Confidence, and Skill in Mathematics
This interactive workshop will provide parents with tools, strategies and information to help a struggling child find their mathematic aptitude and improve both their performance and relationship with math. Topics covered include:
· How the child’s brain learns math
· Why is learning math so hard and how we, as parents, make learning math harder?
· How a child’s beliefs about ability impact their math performance
· Parent strategies that can influence or change a child’s belief system when a child’s confidence is starting to falter
· How parents unintentionally feed negative associations with math and how we can break anxiety and failure cycles
· Math phobia and anxiety and how parents can prevent/stop this destructive pattern
· Home strategies that support school curriculum and improve a child’s performance and relationship with math
· Detecting math difficulties and determining the nature of the problem
The math experiences that a child has in elementary school provides the foundation for the relationship a child has with mathematics throughout his or her life. Many children at the elementary school level are already beginning to struggle with math skill building and are beginning to develop a negative relationship with mathematics. This often leads to anxiety and tensions that undermine confidence, limit performance, and create a struggle that often lasts a lifetime. Parents play a decided role in how a child both perceives and performs in math. The influence of parent action regarding mathematics at the elementary level is one of the most critical in a child’s academic development.

We talked about giving thanks today...We then each wrote about one of our classroom friends. I cannot tell you how much I LOVE my little dragons. Not only is their writing improving but they have such nice things to say about one another! You all should be VERY proud. Your child will bring home a turkey with what their friend wrote about them...(probably next week)! However, I will definitely try to get them hung up in the hall...so if you happen to come for the book fair or for Thanksgiving lunch be sure to check them out!
Speaking of giving thanks...I can't believe in one short week we will be on break. My mom, the two boys and I will drive to Minnesota so that the boys can spend some time with their Minnesota Grandma. My mom and I will meet my youngest sister in Minneapolis for some "girl" time. I am so thankful for my wonderful family...Including my Robertson Family! Thank you all for making this a wonderful year!

Leap Year?

Yesterday the topic of leap year came up at calendar time. Of course one of our little dragons was very curious...SO...I started to explain what it was and how it worked. In the middle of the conversation I started to think, "what if I'm not explaining this right?"! So, I decided to turn it around and assign it for a trip to the treasure box homework!!! Ethan explained to us today that Leap Year is a day added to February and it's only once every 4 years. He also told us that when his uncle was on a mission he had a friend that turned 5!!!
Thanks to Ethan for doing that research!!

Well...I can definitely tell we are ALL ready for the "fall" break! Our behavior has been all over the place. Everyone seems to be a bit "antsy" and "chatty"...Please remind your little dragons that it is important to listen and follow directions! (thanks)
This week in science we have been talking about parts to a whole. What will happen if there isn't a battery in the remote control? Do we need a light bulb for the lamp to work? I then gave everyone an envelope full of "parts" in private everyone had a chance to put the parts together to make a "whole"...A whole what you might ask! Well...most decided it would be a TURKEY...(that's what I had in mind as well...) I had one little one put the parts together to make a SPACESHIP!!! I love it! When we did reveal that the parts were indeed the parts to a turkey everyone quickly made turkeys. I have attached our poem of the week and some pictures of our Turkey Farm!
I'm very disappointed in my blogger abilities...We have been practicing our doubles and doubles plus one in class and today I shared a FUN song on movie maker and I HAVE been trying for over a WEEK to upload it and can NOT figure it out! Your little one will just have to sing it for you!
In class we have been practicing our reader's theater Arthur's Thanksgiving. I plan to send it home on Thursday and Friday for practice. We will not be doing a "PLAY" in class. But we will be recording and using still pictures to share. Please stay tuned!
Spelling practice: got, dot, spot, top, mop, shop, I , can, it, an, *cotton, crops
Have a wonderful evening!

Fall Book Fair

Miss Guy's Dragons will go preview the Fall Book Fair on Friday the 13th from 1:30-2:00. The students will make a "wish list" of items they would like to purchase. You will have a chance to look over the list and discuss with your child which books, if any, they will be allowed to buy.
On Tuesday, Nov. 17th, from 1:15-1:45 anyone who has money in our classroom will be allowed to go to the book fair to purchase books. Please send your money in an envelope marked with your child's name and any special instructions...(my child may ONLY buy books...if one of my child's wish list books is not available they may substitute with another book) if there are no instructions then the book fair helpers will allow them to purchase whatever!
IF you would like to go with your child to help them pick out and purchase books Wednesday, Nov. 18th would be a great day to do this. You may take your child to the book fair during recess and then have a yummy lunch in the cafeteria!
I'm sure the library will be open after school as well most days. I will find out more and let you know!

Today was an exciting day! We spent the morning in the library learning about Marc Brown, the author of Arthur books. Tomorrow we will listen to some stories and make some story maps. We will list the story elements (what thinking map should we use??? hmmm a TREE MAP...YES) and then we will break the events down into beginning, middle and end (what map would be best for that? A FLOW MAP? RIGHT AGAIN).
In math we are practicing counting on. When we add I always like to "put" or "write" the biggest number on my hand and close it up! That helps us remember to count on from that number!
We played "Walk on the Wild Side" in science today. Played much like Simon Says. If I said a statement that was true the kids had to act like the animal in the statement. If my statement was false they had to sit completely still!!! LOTS of fun.
Spelling Pre Tests came home today! Please make sure to look at the back for the challenge words. On Friday, everyone will do the regular words, the bonus words and give the challenge words a try! So...even if your little dragon got all of the words correct today...it wouldn't hurt to review them and maybe brainstorm some others that could be in that chunk family!
New guided reading books came home today! I am SOOOO happy with the progress of our reading. Everyone is sounding more confident and using strategies effectively to figure out those "tricky" words! Keep practicing at home!
I will be out on Wednesday, hopefully, that will be the last day for a while! I miss my "babies" when I have to be gone!!!

Good Morning!
I hope this finds everyone healthy and happy after a "holiday" weekend. The holiday season has officially started. We only have 3 weeks until Fall break. Then 3 weeks in December before winter holidays! Things start to move quickly!!!
This week we will be doing our Marc Brown Author Study in the library with Mrs. Towle!
On Wednesday don't forget to head out to Frutti Cup for a Robertson Fundraiser! YUMMY...
And Friday is the FISD Chili Challenge. Robertson, unfortunately, will not have a booth this year but feel free to head over and support FRISCO!!!
Have a wonderful week!

| Make a Smilebox scrapbook |
Parker was an AWESOME dragon of the week...
so sorry it has taken me so long to post her special smilebox!

Today we painted our FIRST t-shirt of the year! We painted the "palms" (as Ethan mentioned) of our hands to create the lights... On TUESDAY your child will be going to Frisco Safety Town...remember they want us to be dressed casual...tennis shoes, shorts or pants...and when your child arrives at school he/she will get to put on their very own STOP LIGHT!!! Depending on what the weather is supposed to be like you may want to send them with a long sleeved shirt to wear under this!!!
Thanks to all of you that have brought in your shirts...If you have not...please send in a pkg. We will need to get started on our holiday shirt soon!
Not only did we paint today, but we had our eyes, ears, height and weight screened...Nurse Brandi will be sending home more information on the outcomes!
We ALSO...took a spelling test (which I have not yet graded) and our math CBA #2!!! Our 4th grade book buddies came and we had a good time reading with them! WHEW...what a busy Friday.
Have a wonderful weekend and I'll see everyone on Tuesday!
