The day began with the pups learning their new "secret code" (also known as editing marks!)
I was tickled pink when they pulled out their writing folders and began proofreading their past work. Eliette said "I circled 'at' because I know now that you spell it with an E at the end but I didn't know it before!" (ate!) Good job Eliette!Afterwards we began discerning patterns and rhymes as we begin discussing the Old Lady Who Swallowed... today we started off with the original! This week we will see other variations and how she also swallowed books, bats, and other strange things. We clapped to the beat of the poem to show how some of the words rhymed! Miles suggested that they underline those words on their copies in different colors according to the different rhymes; how smart! They read my mind!
What great pups! We also introduced new stations today for when they are finished. We have a pocket chart and they can opt to visit the Writing Station (which I must admit is pretty awesome!) As well as the Poetry Station where the pups can read their poetry to a buddy and vice versa. We still have the popular Listening Station that was introduced last week and they are getting the hang of taking turns and waiting patiently; so proud!
In Science we put the fruit that was donated so generously (thank you!) to good use! Since we are using fruit to help us classify and record this week, we had a "speed activity" where the students rotated fruits and had two minutes per fruit to replicate the image in their Science journal as well as one observation about each fruit, and they did such a great job! I saw some awesome illustrations and detailed observations as I was monitoring and timing. It was so funny to hear how they made sure to finish when I said "One more minute..."
We made a graph that the pups filled in on their own! It had different adjectives to describe the fruit that they had seen. Here you can see Owen filling in his graph describing if a fruit was big, small, heavy, light, bumpy, smooth, or spiky. Love it!
Justin presented us with the weather today and did a great job!
In Math we are beginning our study of patterns and wouldn't you know it, as soon as ask "can anyone tell me what a pattern is?" I get "ABABABAB" and "ABBABBABBA" in response! I was slack-jawed for a moment there! They "secretly" made patterns with the UNifix cubes and revealed it slowly to their partner, who was supposed to guess the pattern and finish it for them and vice versa. They made absolutely certain that no one was peeking!
I've been enjoying the pups so much, it's hard to believe I am almost finished. I can't wait to see what they do in the next week!
As a reminder:
1. If your pup brings home Guided Reading books, they need to come back the next day,
2. Thursday is Picture Day!
Have a great rest of the day!
