Parker was an AWESOME dragon of the week...

so sorry it has taken me so long to post her special smilebox!

Today we painted our FIRST t-shirt of the year! We painted the "palms" (as Ethan mentioned) of our hands to create the lights... On TUESDAY your child will be going to Frisco Safety Town...remember they want us to be dressed casual...tennis shoes, shorts or pants...and when your child arrives at school he/she will get to put on their very own STOP LIGHT!!! Depending on what the weather is supposed to be like you may want to send them with a long sleeved shirt to wear under this!!!
Thanks to all of you that have brought in your shirts...If you have not...please send in a pkg. We will need to get started on our holiday shirt soon!

Not only did we paint today, but we had our eyes, ears, height and weight screened...Nurse Brandi will be sending home more information on the outcomes!

We ALSO...took a spelling test (which I have not yet graded) and our math CBA #2!!! Our 4th grade book buddies came and we had a good time reading with them! WHEW...what a busy Friday.

Have a wonderful weekend and I'll see everyone on Tuesday!
We had lots of kids to honor today at round up! Noah was recognized for being a GREAT friend! Thank you Noah...
Nikolas won the drawing for great behavior! Way to go Nikolas!
Brista's joke was a big winner today!!! "Why did the skeleton cross the road?" "To find his GUTS"!!! HA HA HA Our little jokester!
And we ended Round Up with The CHA CHA SLIDE always a favorite!!!

Podcasting is fun!!! We podcasted our stories that we wrote...Unfortunately, Miss Guy messed up when saving. We have to do it all again! BUT...FORTUNATELY...we LOVE hearing ourselves read. So, no worries...mom, dad, aunts, uncles, grammies, and grandpas...we will bring you more Dragon "Tales" soon!

I want to thank so many of you for your thoughts and prayers for my mom! She had her surgery on Monday and they think they got everything...She has 5 days of radiation (2 times a day) and hopefully then we won't have to worry about it anymore! I will be out on Monday and the afternoon of Tuesday to help her get to appointments as well as take care of little bubbas! On Thursday, I will be on campus but we will have a substitute as I will be leading a Thinking Maps training!

I am trying very HARD to get caught up! I haven't forgotten to post a smilebox of our Princess Parker's Dragon Week!!! I hope to get that done tonight...(along with a LOT of laundry)...I'm sorry about homework last night! I will send 2 pages home tomorrow. We actually did the front page of Odd and Even today as a review for the CBA. Please let me know if there are things you need from me!! Like I said, I'm trying to stay on top of things but my mind seems to be thinking about other things!

Field trip to safety town is on Tuesday, Oct. 27th. We will be going in two shifts 10 in the morning and 9 in the afternoon. Please see your child's red folder for specific information. Safety Town has asked that the students be dress as if it were a P.E. Day. If your child is going in the morning...we will NOT be back in time for lunch...so we will eat in the classroom or have a picnic in the courtyard! Please make sure you send a sack lunch and drink with your child!!!

Thanks again for being such a fantastic group of parents! The first 9 weeks has FLOWN by!!!
Look at our writers... these stories are being "rubriced" on ideas!!!
The rubric consists of Beginner, Borrower, Experimenter, Meaning Maker and Experienced Writer. An experimenter: Uses text and art to create messages, Message is clear, Can read their own message, Creates decodable lists, lablels, notes, poems, etc..., Can talk about main ideas and details of message.

I hope to get the kids to podcast their story this week! So...you can read over them and try to figure out which one belongs to your little dragon! I am SO, SO, SO happy with our writing!!! ENJOY

Bye Bye Miss Caras...

In 1942 Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue...

Let's order these events!
Look we did it!!!
Let's find Italy and see how Christopher Columbus found America!

Dragon Writing

Everyone wants a turn!
Good Answer!
Using our circle map to make a tree map.
Our final copies...GREAT job Morgan!
Nice work Blake!

Another FUN day in first grade! Miss Caras got a chance to teach some lessons that needed to be done for her college classes! WE got to enjoy them and learn a lot!

Parker brought the book You Are Special by Max Lucado...It has a wonderful message about ignoring people who are judging you...Just focus on those of us who love you for who you are! Parker thank you so much for sharing!

We made observations of our classroom dragon on our circle map and then took that information and put it on a tree map...The subject of our sentences is The Dragon...our verbs are can, feels and has. We than added in our details. This format allows the kids to see a complete idea...kind of taking away the "abstractness" of "a complete idea"!

And then we had a very cool lesson on Christopher Columbus. We watch a fun video, listened to a story and then sequenced his "life" on a flow map.

Like I said yesterday, unfortunately, today was Miss Caras' last day! But it was a good one and we can't wait until she comes back in January!
Please Enjoy our newest podcasters! Donte, Kirstin, Nikolas, Endya and Eli!! Great job little dragons!

Let's feel the vibration!
Watch this popcorn pop!

Watch this...
Yep it vibrates too!
tuning fork and water
Good vibrations!!!
Today we got to "see" sound...We used a tuning fork and touched it to the bottom of a pie pan filled with popcorn kernals. What fun!!! We also put the tuning fork in some colored water and watched the "waves"!

Homework: spelling words, reading and math. I know there are two math sheets today. Please just have your child work on them. They will not be due until Monday since there is EXTRA!!!

Good Evening...
This morning was packed. We got in guided reading groups...everyone read a new book today and most were able to bring it home! We practice our lockdown drill and then went to computer lab for a little istation time!

This afternoon...I had to leave early for family stuff...but left our little dragons in the GOOD hands of Miss Caras and Mrs. Newell! Miss Caras is getting to be a pro at calander! The kids then reviewed The Dots game and started a math journal...greater than, less than, equal to...As well as ordering numbers from greatest to least and least to greatest! 0-50 Keep practicing that at home!

In Science we started a new unit of study...Sound...Today the kids played Guess Who...and Ms. Caras said, "THEY LOVED IT"!!!

Then it was time for packing up/eating snack and going to specials!

I will be leaving early on Friday as well! Please feel free to come to Robertson Round Up at 2:15!

Thanks for letting me be a part of your children's lives...It makes my day to see their faces each and every morning!

Monday, October 5, 2009

Good Evening...Sorry I am so late tonight. We had art club after school then Ms. Weinke "MADE" me go on a run...(we are trying to get back in shape for our monthly 5ks and our half marathon in April)! AND then I had to take our classroom visitor back to my bubbas house so that "Weekend Bear" can go back to Providence Elementary tomorrow!

Friday, October 2, 2009

WOW! what a day!
This morning we did our morning work...took a spelling test AND traded our money in at the bank!!! We traded all those 1's and 5's for 10's!!!

When we came back from specials we had to catch up in our calendar notebooks...(three days behind...000ps) We found we were already into a NEW month! From our calendar wall we can tell that today was the 29th day of school. 29 has 2 tens and 9 ones. 6+21+2=29. 20+9=29. 30-1=29

Did you know our class lost FOURTEEN teeth in the month of September? We lost 3 in August...WOW...that's a lot of lost teeth!!!

After Calendar we opened our "star" bucks store. We got to spend our "star" behavior bucks!!! What fun! Some chose to spend and YEP some chose to save...
25 bucks = a sticker, 50 bucks = a special pencil, 75 bucks = a treasure, 100 bucks =shoes off in the classroom for a day, 125 bucks = eat with a friend at lunch, 150 bucks = sit in the rolly chair, 175 bucks = you and a friend eat with the teacher, 200 bucks = a special treat for all the DRAGONS
This is very interesting the first few times we do this! "But I don't have any 5's I can't buy a treasure" "Here you go, I want a pencil" (I am handed 1 star buck or 100 star bucks)! We talk about "0ver paying" and then I will give them money back... And then several will come up and give me 5 tens for a pencil and get upset because I didn't "pay them back"!!! I love the learning that goes on during this time but I have to admit...I have to have an EXTRA dose of patience...before we start!

AND THEN the FUN began...We got to experience a liquid changing to a solid!!! YES...we made Vanilla Ice Cream!!! (and I am so sad that it was so crazy...in a good way...that I didn't get to take any pictures! I think I needed about 5 extra pairs of hands this afternoon) But I can assure you we had lots of FUN!!!
Materials: 2 pint size baggies, 1 gallon sized baggie, 1/2 cup whole milk, 1/4 tsp vanilla, 2 Tbls sugar, 5 cups of ice and 6 Tbls of rock salt
Put the sugar, milk and vanilla in one of the small baggies (close it up good) put that baggie in the other small baggie and close that one. Put the ice and rock salt into the Gallon sized bag. Add the milk mixture bags to the big bag and seal it! SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE!!!
We decided that the ice and the rock salt lowered the temperature of the liquid and "froze" it! And then we got a spoon and enjoyed!

We had to say good bye to Gage today! He and his family are moving away! We will definitely miss him!

Have a wonderful weekend!

So sorry...no blog today. Once I checked my phone at 5:00 I had 6 missed calls from my family...they don't call and leave messages, "important call me back" when they know I'm at school! My phone dies if I try to use it after 4:00 without being plugged in! So...now I'm home and need to process and deal with the family issue! Please forgive me!
