You are going to hear LOTS about Thinking Maps this year! This week we are focused on Bubble Maps...used for??? If you can't figure it out be sure to ask your little dragon! Today we "bubble mapped" squirrels on our own and then collaborated on one map and this is what we came up with! I wrote the sentence, "The ___________ squirrel is hiding." We then tried to put our words in the blank...GUESS WHAT? We got it!!! Awesome job 1st graders. You can see how the maps will help us with our writing as we start to focus more on details!
COMPUTER TIME
I didn't get a chance to take my camera out to the lab for our first computer day. We will go out to the POD 1 computer lab for Istation, publishing and other programming fun! Today was all about learning to log in! I will make log in cards to send home so that you can practice with your little one! They need to know their Frisco ISD ID number and their birthdate! The ID number is also the number they will need to use to check out books in the library. It is very important for them to learn this...I know some of them have it memorized from last year! YAY
RECESS
Boy was it warm outside! Who can tell me when we are going to get some FALL like weather? I love hot weather when I'm at the beach or the pool...not standing or playing on the playground!
WRITING
We continue to work on detailed pictures with characters, setting and an event. As the students are writing I am trying to conference with them. One big mistake we see all the time...Me and so and so... Today I noticed several of my friends had already corrected that problem before I could even remind them that So and So always go first! LOL
I Have...Who Has? Does everyone know how to play? Our focus this week is identifying, describing, ordering and comparing numbers 0-25! So we played the game I have...Who Has? We sat in a circle...Each friend had a card!
One person starts by saying, " I have the number ___. Who has the number ____?" The person that has that number says, "I have the number ____. Who has the number ____?" Until we get back to the person we started with! Not only do they have to know thier numbers but they have to be PAYING ATTENTION! We did a great job! Lots of fun! Tomorrow if we can do it in 2 minutes or less then off to the treasure box we go!!!

SCIENCE TIME
First we had to set up our journals for our first HANDS on FUN! I'm not sure if you can see from the picture...but our journal pages are going to be numbered 1L and 1R. On the R (right side) we will be putting information FROM the TEACHER on the L (left side) we will be making our own observations, diagrams, conclusions etc... This has to do with left brain/right brain learning! Mrs. Williams and I
took a class on it this summer! I'm going with the experts and trusting it's going to be a great learning experience for my first graders! After numbering our pages adding the date and the title we then glued in a list of science tools: goggles, pipette, hand lens and balance scale. As the students rotated around the stations it was their job to draw which tools they were working with and label them! We will talk about their uses more tomorrow! I had 19 happy little kids...let me tell you! I think they will all grow up to be scientist!
hmmm...I wonder why a scientist might want to use one of these?
What do we call these things we wear on our face?
This tool was harder to get a picture of! Too many hands wanting to use it!
And...last but not least... What can we do with this contraption?
How many unifix will it take to "equal" the bears?
And here are a couple samples of the finished journal for the day!
I love when I hear!!! "That was SO cool!" "Can we do that again tomorrow?"
Another AWESOME day in room 313...
Tomorrow is our FIRST trip to the library!
