I PROMISE...this picture is saved correctly! Blogger is
making me CRAZY! :)

We had a good day in 313 today!  There were periods of unbelievable GREATNESS and periods of lots of reminders...I guess that averages out to good! I love coming in here and am thankful for this class of little dragons! This morning we practiced spelling words (tomorrow is the test) by playing SPARKLE.  What fun...no losers in sparkle only great spellers!
Everyone is excited to see me getting guided reading folders ready! Next week books will start coming home! Please remember to read with your 1st grader each night and return the "pouch" each day!  If your child doesn't have a book he or she will miss out on Guided reading time! (we don't always have extra books) A new book will not be able to be sent home until the other is returned!
Have a great evening...I'm going to hold my Monkey Bottom!

Congratulations to room 313! Most everyone had a great couple of days while Ms. Guy was not in class!  Today was another busy day though! LOTS to catch up on! And LOTS for Ms. Guy to share with you! Our Dragon of the Week is Ryann!  On Monday, she shared her All About Me Poster!

Ryann's likes PINK!

On Tuesday, Ryann shared one of her favorite books!

Ryann likes Elephant and Piggie books!

Today she recieved special notes from two of her biggest FANS...Mom and Dad.  Ryann would like to share her poem with all of you tomorrow!  (We will pod cast it in the morning!)

Look what we are working on in Literacy Workstations
Nate and Ryann are working on poetry with the MOBI!

Looks like Chica Chica Boom Boom just finished in the listening station!

Randi got an EXTRA WOW for her work in Spelling today!

WOW...look at that cubble (circle/bubble combo) map!
Way to go Sidney!

Hayden is getting some spelling done too!
The afternoon started off with a trip to the library! (Thanks to those of you that are helping your little dragon be responsible!) Mrs. Biamonte showed us a video...highlighting all of the AWESOME books that will be at our book fair this month! (make plans to be there)
Then we started MAP MAKING...We talked about bird's eye view! Took a walk around the building adding important things to our map...roads, parking lots, benches, trees, playground CHECK THEM OUT!
Important street names
Make sure we get it spelled correctly!
What do you have on your map?
Can you find Calmwater Dr?

Look we can read our map!

Close up!
Hmmm...where does this go?
Kerry knows!

look what we know!
During UPS check today...I heard some pretty awsome thinking!  Our problem was 7+6=13...First I asked what a sum was! I heard, "It's the answer to a math question!" So I asked any math question? "No, it's a number!" Any number? "It's the answer to an addition problem!" DING DING DING!  Talking it out working together to get to the correct answer!
Then I posed the question, "What would help me solve our equation quickly?"  A tens frame (that helps me check) Just knowing it! (good answer but what will help me "just know it"?) Then I played our doubles doubles power point song (which I'm hoping to get uploaded for your veiwing pleasure) sometime soon!  Once again I heard some great thinking! Emily noticed that the doubles sums were all even numbers AND were counting by TWOS...Ryann was the first to say...6+6 is 12 and then one more makes 13! AMAZING thinking...(several said that was what they were thinking in their heads as well!!!)

All in all it was a great day back!  I had so much fun being with all my "babies" today! Can't wait for tomorrow! Enjoy your evening!
Thank you Makenna for our Wonderful Window Weather Report!  And I agree...it would be a wonderful day for playing Barbies! :)  Also, eating yummy, ummy cookies!

I'm BAAACKKK! Yippeeee! I missed all my little dragon friends! My flight this morning from North Dakota to Minneapolis was cancelled...so I went into panic mode! They rebooked us on a flight leaving at 3:00 getting into DFW at 7:30! By the time we fed baby Thomas (Little Monkey Bottom), got our bags and got everything loaded into the car it was LATE. But I'm home now...missing him but looking forward to a GREAT day in Room 313! Don't forget it's LIBRARY DAY!!!

Today we were surprised with another Third Grade reader!
Elena read to us Beatrice Doesn't Want To!
Again today...I heard..."I loved that book!"

I'm so mad at myself...we all went outside with our shades on to show what BRIGHT FUTURES we have...and I deleted off my camera.  My memory card was full and I needed one more picture for a photostory we are making so...YEP...without thinking I hit delete! AND not only that but I also deleted Kerry and his special lunch guest...Grandma Ruth! OH I'm so SORRY!!!
Today I had to have two cameras going because on battery was dead so while that was charging I used the other one and...well...the rest is HISTORY!

We did get a chance to work on the MOBI.  What fun technology can be!

What do we understand?
Randi got us all headed in the right direction.
How many ladybugs altogether? 7, 3
Connor got the plan of action down for us...
SSM +!
Here's what it looks like so far!
Emily took over writing our number sentence!
And Trenton was in charge of writing the sum!  (I think that's right, Trenton)
And our final product on the BIG SCREEN!
Awesome job first graders.
Don't forget...Conferences are coming up! Oct. 11th.  If you have not already done so...please sign up!  If we need to meet prior to that before or after school please let me know! We will figure out a time for sure!

So...this will have to be it for today!  Heads up...I will be out next Monday and Tuesday.  I will be going to North Dakota to help my little sister and Thomas come down for a visit!  I do hope to get our Looking Forward to College Photostory uploaded tomorrow! But if not...I'll get it up when I come back!  Have a wonderful next few days!

Thanks to all of you for everything you do!

GUEST READER!!!
Wow...what fun it is to have students read to students!  As a reward a third grader (a very special 3rd grader...) chose to come back to FIRST GRADE and read to us!  Braden entertained us with Don't take a Shark to the Dentist.  The first graders LOVED it!

Thanks Braden for choosing OUR class to read to!  It was a pleasure!

We have been waiting ALL week for our weather report!  Emily picked Hayden's name out of a bag and here it is!!!! Enjoy!

We had our health screening in the library today. Everyone was very excited about that!  Unfortunately, we didn't get to go and check out new books though! SO...make sure books are back in school by Friday! We will go right after specials!

Our very first first grade writing sample will be hanging in the  hallway! I am so impressed!  Three sentences all on TOPIC...no fru fru!

Thanks to all of our dad's who were at Watch D.O.G.S last night! If you happened to sign up for a day please let me know so that I can "adjust" your schedule. We would LOVE to have you participate in some classroom activities throughout the day!

We took our first math CBA (curriculum based assessment) today!

And that about covers our day!

We watched the President's Welcome Back to School address this morning!  I was very impressed with what our little ones took from the speech!
  • "we can all make new friends" -Emily
  • "treat everyone with respect" -Trenton
  • "do YOUR best...school is not a competition" -Hayden
  • "do your job at school, work hard and you will be SUCCESSFUL" -Drake
AWESOME listening and applying First Graders!

Mrs. O'Hearn came in today and talked to us about going to college and what we want to be!  More to come on that!
Day two of Observational Writing.  We looked back at our tree map and read the sentences.  Each student then copied the tree map and then "took the sentences off the map"!  Look at these!  Check out the capital letters, spaces, ending punctuation and VBH (very best handwriting)!

Awesome job guys!
Tomorow everyone will be creating their own "story"! We will use the same subject and verbs but everyone will be able to pick from the circle map to finish their sentences!  I will still be looking for a capital letter at the beginning, spaces and ending punctuation. I will also check to make sure the sentences make sense!

After writing we continued practince making number equations for given SUMS!  We used unifix and recorded the equations...guess what we noticed a pattern!
SUM 7...0+7, 1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1 and 7+0!!!

Then we looked back at our school map and I was so excited to hear that many of my friends had already made predictions about which destination would be farthest, near and closest!  We had a GREAT time timing ourselves! (everyone was so well behaved and on task during our lesson...We all got +1's)

Look at our bubbles!  Everyone is anxious to find out how long it takes to get to Mrs. O'Hearns office!  Hmmm I wonder if her office is the farthest place we went, near to our classroom or the closest place we traveled?

Drake is keeping track of how long it takes EVERYONE to get from our classroom to the carpet in the computer lab!  (We forgot to stop it so we deducted a few seconds)

After we traveled all over the school keeping track of our time...we came back to record our answers!  Lots of comparing and ordering of numbers! Looks GOOD to me!

And OF COURSE we had the pleasure of our Dragon of the Week sharing one of his favorite books: Pout Pout Fish  (I think it quickly became one of our classroom favorites!)
Thank you for reading Kerry!
Tonight is our WATCH D.O.G.S kickoff pizza party!
Please come to find out more about this AWESOME program.
Please let me know what days/time you sign up for!  I would like to schedule some activities you can do in the classroom with our DRAGON friends!
Hopefully, this is on your calendar!

Thank you to all of you that have volunteered for the Fall Festival...However, if anyone else would STILL like to help please....
Robertson Elementary’s Fall Festival will be held on Friday, October 15th from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm. Volunteers are needed before the festival, during the event, and clean-up. If you are willing to volunteer please get in contact with our PTA volunteer coordinator at starlahock@hotmail.com.

Monday, Monday, Monday

It was so great to be back with all my little dragon friends!  Mrs. Franklin had WONDERFUL comments about our class! That makes me so happy...
Today we started some Observational Writing.  As you will see Thinking Maps
are a BIG part of our writing this year.  The pictures will show you our color coding to help us make sure that we have all the necessary parts of a sentence!
Green is for our subject, Red is how we are going to describe it (details) and Blue is for our verbs or connecting words!  You will see some "sparkle" on our sentences because it gives our sentences something extra special!
OBSERVATIONAL WRITING
The Dragon
The Dragon
All of the things we OBSERVED
The dragon
looks, is, has
silly, long like a snake,  two wings
Look 3 complete sentences all on topic!
Nooooo FRU FRU here!

Be on the look out for more writing like this!
This afternoon wasn't ALL FUN and GAMES...We got caught up on our calendar notebook. I got to hear all about Emily and Nate's big birthday plans! Connor took the birthday bag home...AND we were introduced to our FIRST DRAGON of the WEEK....
Kerry told us all about his FAVORITES!
He has one younger brother, Loves to go to Sea World and the beach and his favorite toys are Action Figures!

NOW...let the games begin!  Today we learned that the answer to an addition problem is the --------?  Hopefully, your first grader will be able to finish that sentence. If not...sum! We played, My SUM Is today.  The kids were paired up with unifix cubes a die and a game board.  If they rolled and even number they got to move 2 spaces. If they rolled an odd number they moved 1 space.  What ever number they landed on was to become the sum of their addition problem!  If  they couldn't figure out an equation then they had to go back home!  It took a little while to catch on! But there were some GREAT efforts!

After math we started learning about Farthest, Near and Closest...What better way to learn this concept than playing Pin the Petal on the Flower!  Lots of fun was had BUT we did get to have some serious discussions about which petals were the closest, farthest and near to the seed pod!  Check it out for yourself!
Randi was the closest for a lot of the game!
TRENTON come BACK...you are headed in the WRONG direction!
OH Nate!
We decided if you got your petal on the WHITE paper then you were "near"...and ONE of those would be the "closest"...
Connor, Drake and Kerry were close but the consensus was...KERRY was CLOSEST.
As you can see...not all petals made it even into this wide angle shot! :)  So they were the FARTHEST away!
Tomorrow to continue on this topic...we are going to take some "trips" to different places around the school!  Look at the map below with your child and have them predict which place will take the longest to get to and which one will take the shortest amount of time and WHY...Remember the vocabulary from today's lesson! hint hint hint!
During our lesson today we were also introduced to the MOBI...not sure what that stands for but we are going to have lots of fun with it this year!  It allows us to write on the screen from our desk...Make the screen more interactive!  The picture above is a picture of the screen...I highlighted our room and drew the lines to the places we will visit...LOTS of FUN!
Thanks to those of you who sent in your 5.00 for the fall festival basket!  There is a prize for the classes that have 100% participation...That means we need to raise 100.00 for our basket!! Doesn't matter if everyone gives we just have to have 5.00 per child in our class! I'm so excited for the PTA Fall Festival!  It looks like it is going to have lots of fun stuff!  Can't wait to see everyone there!
