peRIMeter fun

Yesterday we started talking about perimeters.  We found out that in order to find the perimeter of something we must measure around the  edge and then add all lengths together. To help us remember to measure all the way around we emphasized the RIM in perimeter! 

Today we went outside and used a SHAQ size foot to measure a square in the basketball court.  WOW...we've got some smarties. After measuring the first two sides each equaling 10 Shaq feet...I heard...I think it is a SQUARE and all the sides are going to be 10 Shaq feet long.  If all the sides equal 10 Shaq feet then the perimeter must be 40 Shaq feet.  EXACTLY.  Since all sides were 10 we concluded it was indeed a square.  Then we observed that the basketball court was made up of these squares...We didn't NEED to measure since we already knew one side was 10 Shaq feet...so I ran around the perimeter of the basketball court as our first graders counted by 10! The perimeter of our basketball court is 120 Shaq feet! (just in case anyone was interested!)

Our unit of measurement today...it is about a foot and a half (in standard measurement)
